City Introduces Electric Buses to Edmonton

June 12, 2014 in BYD, Electric Bus, Electric Vehicles

Edmonton, Canada: Edmonton Transit System (ETS) added some stealth to its fleet. It began testing two electric buses known as ETS Stealth buses this week. The buses run quietly and cleanly and are more cost-effective to fuel and maintain than diesel engine buses currently used. Operated entirely on electricity, ETS Stealth buses have no exhaust pipes and generate zero emissions when being driven.

“We are very excited to be introducing electric bus technology to Edmonton streets,” said Councillor Andrew Knack. “The City of Edmonton is committed to finding the best combination of transportation technologies to enhance Edmonton’s sustainability, and we’re eager to see how well the ETS Stealth bus delivers ETS service across the city.”

The ETS Stealth buses will run on various ETS routes across the city, travelling with regularly scheduled buses in service and for special events. Passengers can board free of charge. Instead of paying a fare, passengers will be asked to complete a survey describing their experience riding an electric bus. “Public feedback is essential to determining the success of the ETS Stealth pilot project,” said ETS Bus Operations Divisional Supervisor Linda Kadatz. “We hope to hear from every ETS Stealth passenger so that we can make an informed decision later this year about pursuing electric bus technology in our long-term fleet replacement plans.”

The ETS Stealth buses are on lease from BYD Company Ltd. (Build Your Dreams) until October 2014. During the four-month pilot ETS will evaluate the suitability of the ETS Stealth bus based on several factors, including passenger load capacity, passenger comfort, reliability and how well the buses navigate Edmonton’s roadway network. Semuttran Pilot Tests BYD Pure Electric Bus in Piracicaba Brazil

June 11, 2014 in BYD, Electric Bus, Electric Vehicles, EV News

Piracicaba, Brazil — Brazilian Transit Operator Via Agile and Piracicaba’s Transit Authority Semuttran have started pilot testing with a pure-electric transit bus from BYD Company Ltd. The purpose of the evaluation is to find ways to reduce transportation costs and unnecessary emissions in and around the city of Piracicaba.

With the rising cost of diesel fuel in Brazil, Semuttran currently has an average operational fuel cost of R$ 0.90/ km (~$0.61 USD/ mile) on their diesel fueled transit fleet. Their fleet travels 93,500 km (57.6 K miles) annually, so the BYD Pure Electric bus would save them R$ 60,775 (~$26,423 USD) each year in fuel (electricity for the eBus is R$ 0.25/km or ~$0.18USD/ mile). These savings are necessary for operators as many cities in Brazil are attempting to expand their transportation footprint to meet growing demand. “Pilot tests have been very positive – if technical and commercial performance fulfills requirements for the system in Piracicaba, the City will foster the use of electrical buses,” said Jorge Akira, secretary of Semuttran. “So far, all reports from the bus drivers have been positive. There is not much difference from a normal bus when driving, since steering, pedals and dashboards are similar,” said Alcides Ferreira, a driver who has been working for Piracicaba transit companies for 17 years.

BYD’s pure-electric bus employs many advanced technologies developed in-house by BYD’s staff of more than 15,000 engineers, such as the advanced environmentally-friendly, Iron-Phosphate (or “Fe”) batteries, in-wheel hub motors and regenerative braking systems. The break-through Iron-Phosphate battery is fire-safe and non-toxic: there are no caustic materials contained in the battery, no toxic electrolytes or heavy metals and can be completely recycled. The BYD electric bus delivers a host of operational and environmental benefits for public transport riders, operators and people in the community – it is very quiet and ensures a comfortable ride without vibrations, jerks or noise associated with the conventional buses and combustion engines. The bus can also drive for more than 155 miles, even in heavy city traffic on a single charge. The bus has completed more than 16 million miles of “in revenue service” and has been evaluated in many major cities all over the world.

Altoona Testing of First 40-foot, Zero-Emissions Electric Rapid Transit Bus is Complete

May 28, 2014 in BYD, Electric Bus, Electric Vehicles, EV News

The BYD Electric Bus is first 40-foot electric bus to complete the Federal Transit Administration’s sponsored testing

Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA: The Altoona Bus Research and Testing Center under the Larson Institute and sponsored by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), last week completed the FTA’s “new model bus testing program” of the first 40-foot, all-electric bus. The BYD Electric Bus has successfully completed the Altoona structural integrity testing program in a fast 116 track days *with full reports published soon. This is the world’s first and only long-range battery electric transit bus in mass production and the only bus capable of driving continuously for up to 24 hours on-a-single-charge that has also received TVM approvals and qualified for FTA funded projects.

“The Altoona staff were professional and accommodating guiding BYD through the process and ensuring all testing met the Federal standards. The FTA were supportive of our efforts to ensure that this vehicle, the first 40-foot, all-electric bus to be tested met the North American standards and was properly tested within the guidelines. BYD will commence shortly with the testing of the BYD 60-foot Bus-Rapid-Transit (BRT) style all-electric bus at Altoona, another first for the Transit Industry,” said BYD Motors President Stella Li. “We believe that our 40-foot bus is one of the most structurally sound transit buses on roads today. Yet like all manufacturers, our engineers found ways, through this testing, to make improvements to ensure the sort of long-lasting quality BYD has become known for.” BYD’s electric bus has no transmission, clutches or drive train but has instead two robust in-wheel-drive motors powered by batteries on board the bus. BYD sees this recent accomplishment as the first of many, in what will be a long and productive relationship with the Altoona Bus Testing and Research Center. The 40 foot BYD Electric Bus is just the first of three different size options that will be offered to the United States for the 2014/2015 deliveries. Next at Altoona will be the 60-foot articulated BYD All-Electric bus.

BYD Unveils Zero-Emissions, Electric Forklift Series for Europe with Unique ‘Battery-for-Life’

May 21, 2014 in BYD, Electric Utility Vehicles, Electric Vehicles, EV charging, EV News

Advanced battery technology integrated in the newest series of electric forklifts from BYD slashes operating costs for forklift operators with a life-time battery.

Ask any forklift fleet manager what the biggest headache is with traditional electric forklift trucks and the answer is invariably the same the time, trouble and cost involved in constantly having to recharge them as well as the risk of damage to the battery due to improper maintenance, which leads to expensive battery replacement. But now a new concept in battery technology is completely redefining the performance users will come to expect from their electric materials handling equipment, removing many of these problems and substantially reducing the operating costs involved.

BYD’s Iron-Phosphate (or “Fe”) battery, being unveiled at CeMAT 2014 in a new series of forklift trucks at the BYD Europe booth (Hall 25, Stand C21), requires significantly less time to charge than traditional lead-acid batteries and offers dramatically extended battery life. For the first time ever, the truck battery needs never be replaced over the life of the forklift. Typical charging time for a BYD Iron-Phosphate battery is just one to two hours less than a quarter of the time required by lead-acid alternatives. Gone are the days when the only way to extend shift life was to have a second battery and some heavyweight battery changing equipment on hand, because the working hours of a BYD battery can be significantly extended at any time with a quick ‘top-off’ session just 10 minutes’ charging while the lift truck operator takes a coffee break, in fact, is all that is needed to extend working time up to 45 minutes. This quick full charging time and the ability to top up the charge in short bursts without damaging overall battery life makes the BYD Iron-Phosphate battery hugely flexible for end users.

But charging isn’t just extremely quick and flexible it’s also highly cost-effective, since the BYD Fe battery consumes around 40% less electricity during charging/discharging than a standard lead-acid one. That means much lower energy bills for users of the technology as well as making a serious contribution to reducing carbon emissions. Talking of emissions, charging the BYD Iron-Phosphate battery is also much cleaner than alternative battery technologies, venting no hydrogen gases normal seen when lead-acid batteries are charging (and restricted to vented areas). That allows users to position their charging stations right next to the drivers’ rest areas without problems, making it quick and easy for drivers to park and plug in reducing employee downtime walking from remote charging stations. It also helps to keep any risk of collision between pedestrians and other vehicles to a minimum. The Fe battery contributes to safety in other ways, too: unlike some lithium-ion batteries, BYD’s Iron-Phosphate batteries do not present risks, even when dropped, crushed or subjected to overcharging. They do not contain heavy metals or acid, either, and so cannot contaminate ground or water supplies as a lead-acid battery might, and they don’t heat up during charging the way that traditional lead-acid batteries do.

BYD’s revolutionary Fe battery technology also does completely away with the need for daily and weekly battery maintenance, saving on the time and labour otherwise involved in frequent battery inspections and top-ups and, of course, on the expensive distilled water normally required. The upshot of all this is a very dramatic savings in operating costs: BYD has calculated that the annual operating and battery amortization cost savings when using an Iron-Phosphate battery in a single-shift, five-day-aweek lift truck operation could exceed €1,500 a year. The astonishing lifespan of a BYD Iron-Phosphate battery creates a further layer of savings, because even after 4,000 charging cycles, these amazing power cells retain over 75% of their original capacity. That means that after 8 years of dual-shift operation five days a week, the remaining capacity in the battery will exceed 75%. The life span of the BYD battery is much longer than that of a typical (four to six year) lifespan of an ordinary lead-acid battery.

That means a single BYD Iron-Phosphate battery could replace up to four traditional lead acid ones over 8-10 years in operations where daily battery changes were required for the latter a savings in battery purchase costs over the period of over €10,000 for every lithium iron phosphate battery-equipped forklift in use. Littlewonder, perhaps, that Javier Contijoch, Forklifts Director at BYD Europe, saidhe was expecting a massive level of interest in the new technology, both atCeMAT 2014 and in coming months, “Companies running lift trucks will becompelled to take a closer look at this technology,” he predicted. “No fleet manager these days can afford to ignore the massive savings, in both purchase and operating costs, of the BYD ‘battery-for-life’ approach – or to pass up the opportunity of using such a clean, safe and sustainable source of power.”

“It’s obvious that Iron-Phosphate battery technology is a breakthrough in the forklift sector, and BYD, as the world’s biggest battery manufacturer, has now made future a modern-day reality with the new range of trucks being launched here today,” added Contijoch.

Only Automotive Manufacturer to receive the 2014 “U Green Award”

HONG KONG — BYD Company Ltd. has been named alongside technology giants Samsung Group and Philips yet again. This time, for their innovative steps towards a cleaner tomorrow. On May 8th BYD was a recipient of the U Green Award, presented by the Hong Kong Economic Times Group’s U Magazine. This award is quite significant due to the fact BYD Company Ltd. was the only automotive group recognized.

This year’s awards took on the theme “Green Ideas”, and from BYD’s Green City Solution and Future Village concepts, to the electrified taxi program they are currently operating in Hong Kong, they were an obvious selection for the 2014 awards. Over the past year BYD has made a strong entry to the Hong Kong market implementing their world renowned electric taxis, and have already saved the city more than 575 tons of carbon emissions. The 2,240,000 kilometers travelled over the past year make up the equivalent of planting nearly 300 trees in the middle of Hong Kong. BYD will continue to implement the e6 taxi in as many fleets as possible and help the city join other global epicenters such as London, New York and Los Angeles in the Clean Air Movement.

The BYD e6 is a pure-electric utility cross-over that BYD has been successfully marketing to fleet operators around the world since 2011. With an operational range of more than 186 miles per charge and room to seat five passengers plus luggage, it has carved out a niche as the go-to pure-electric taxi now operating in Shenzhen, New York, London, Hong Kong, Nanjing, Xi’an and Bogota, to name a few. Utilizing the same fire safe Iron-Phosphate “Fe” battery chemistry as the electric buses, BYD only expects to sell more and more of these vehicles as fear of battery safety continues to rise around the globe.
