The spacious double-deck cars offer travellers an elegant interior design, in particular the highly comfortable, wide reclining seats with individual armrests, tablet, footrest, reading light and electric power supply.

The self-regulating air conditioning system and the low noise and vibration levels contribute to a quiet atmosphere ideally suited for intercity services. Focusing on passenger comfort, the architecture of the train provides extra-wide cars of 3 m width while storing the technical equipment on the roof to gain space and thus improve comfort in the passenger areas further.

With its wide doors, the train offers level access from the platforms of every major train station. This train is equipped with a dedicated space for people with disabilities and offers a universally accessible toilet and an access ramp so passengers in wheelchairs can travel in full autonomy.

With a capacity of 400 to 475 seats, depending on the interior layout of its long version (110 m), the OMNEO Premium train operates at speeds up to 200 km/h. This Premium version benefits from the numerous advantages of a technical platform thanks to the Regio 2N version currently in the process of certification, which will be deployed widely in the French Regions. These advantages include delivery times, initial reliability and economies of scale for operation and maintenance costs.

The OMNEO product platform integrates BOMBARDIER ECO4 technologies such as the BOMBARDIER MITRAC permanent magnet motor which allow the highest level of energy efficiency.

“With the OMNEO Premium product, Bombardier goes beyond high comfort transportation and offers a new travel experience in tune with contemporary lifestyle demands,” said Jean Bergé, President of Bombardier Transportation France. “As the Regio 2N, the first trains of the OMNEO product platform, start operating, the OMNEO Premium train will be a step ahead in terms of delivery times and reliability. Also, maintenance and operations costs will benefit substantially from the platform model.”

  • The first vehicle built under the license agreement was presented in Nanjing to the customer from the city of Suzhou
  • CSR Puzhen holds a 10-year license to produce trams based on BOMBARDIER FLEXITY 2 technology

The roll-out for the first tram produced under a 10-year-license agreement was held at the Nanjing manufacturing site of CSR Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Co. Ltd. (CSR Puzhen). This is the first vehicle manufactured under the technology license agreement signed in July 2012 between rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation and CSR Puzhen.

Following the first public tender for modern 100% low-floor trams in China, Bombardier partner CSR Puzhen, a subsidiary of China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Corporation Limited, won an order for 18 low-floor trams for the city of Suzhou. CSR Puzhen is building the trams based on Bombardier’s FLEXITY 2 technology at its site in Nanjing. Bombardier has developed the vehicle design, provides training and delivers on-site support. The tram is equipped with BOMBARDIER FLEXX Urban 3000 bogies and BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion technology.

Jianwei Zhang, President of Bombardier China, said: “We are proud to be part of this milestone and look forward to seeing Suzhou become a benchmark in modern tramway operation in China. As the world market leader in trams, Bombardier is the ideal partner to introduce this technology in China successfully.”

Suzhou New District Tram Co., Ltd. (SND) will operate the trams within the Suzhou new & high-tech industrial development zone, a “greenfield” satellite city within Suzhou municipality. Suzhou is a city of 11 million people located in the southeast of Jiangsu Province, close to Shanghai.

The five-section bi-directional, multi-articulated low-floor trams for Suzhou are 32 m long and 2.65 m wide. These modern low-floor trams provide the latest standards in safety, passenger comfort, accessibility and energy consumption. CSR Puzhen is also producing trams for two lines in Nanjing (Hexi and Qilin lines), featuring Bombardier’s catenary-free technology based on BOMBARDIER PRIMOVE traction batteries.

Bombardier has sold more than 1,200 FLEXITY 100 per cent low-floor trams worldwide. About 3,500 Bombardier trams and light rail vehicles are in revenue service or on order in approximately 100 cities across Europe, Australia and North America.

In order to sustain global economic growth while ensuring the health and quality of life of citizens, cities the world over are looking for smarter and more environmentally friendly forms of mass transit. Trams and light rail vehicles are the most energy efficient mode of transportation, consuming up to five times less energy per passenger than cars travelling with an average of between one and two people.

Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation today presented the first BOMBARDIER FLEXITY 2 tram for the Gold Coast Light Rail system. At a ceremony to mark the launch of the new branding for operator franchisee, GoldLinQ, Dan Osborne, Managing Director of Bombardier Transportation Australia, introduced the new light rail vehicle to an audience of Gold Coast local officials, dignitaries and community representatives as well as project stakeholders.

The GCLRT project is part of an 18-year public private partnership contract between the Queensland State Government and GoldLinQ. As operator franchisee of stage one of the GCLRT, GoldLinQ, a consortium that includes Bombardier Transportation, is responsible for the design, construction, operations and maintenance. The first phase of the project will connect Gold Coast University Hospital to Broadbeach. The line will be serviced by a fleet of 14 seven-module FLEXITY 2 trams, to be delivered by Bombardier over the next four months.

FLEXITY 2 is the latest tram technology from Bombardier, the market leader in the light rail segment.

After a two-and-a-half-month sea journey, the first two FLEXITY 2 trams for the Gold Coast arrived in the Port of Brisbane on September 10, 2013 and were transported to the depot in complete units, using a specially designed 20 axle steerable trailer. The first tram will undergo testing and commissioning on the first section of the corridor, running from the depot along Queen and Nerang streets to Southport.

A further six trams, built in Germany, are on their way to Australia, with the remaining trams scheduled to be delivered by early 2014. Passenger services on stage one are expected to commence from mid-2014.

Based on Bombardier’s highly successful FLEXITY family of light rail vehicles that combines proven technology with continuous improvement and innovation, the Gold Coast tram has been specifically styled by Bombardier’s Industrial Design team in Brisbane to include a wave motif on the cab front. The tram is 43.4 m long and 2.65 m wide with seven modules for higher capacity and better passenger flow. It features the signature blue and gold colours of the Gold Coast and is the first tram in the world designed and built to carry surf boards on specially designed racks. These trams also feature the most powerful air-conditioning system for this class of tram, suitable for Australia’s hot summers.

As well as having 100% low floor technology for optimal ride comfort, the FLEXITY 2 trams reflect Bombardier’s commitment to sustainability in public transport. The twin benefits of saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions, for example through the integration of the energy efficient BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion system, also help reduce operating costs. More than 4,000 Bombardier trams and light rail vehicles are in revenue service or on order in more than 75 cities across Europe, Australia and North America.

Since December 2012, Calgary Transit has been in the process of selecting a new, long-term strategic partner for the supply of future light rail vehicles.

Five major companies bid on the RFP that Calgary Transit put out. The City has finalized negotiations with the highest rated bidder and has entered into a contract with Siemens Canada for the purchase of new S200 light rail vehicles. These vehicles will be manufactured in Sacramento, CA. at a Siemens Industry Inc. plant.

The S200 air-conditioned vehicles have a new design, a new look and new features to improve the passenger experience. The new design will increase overall comfort, passenger information, reliability, security and accessibility. They will also enable future four-car CTrain operation and the replacement of some of the oldest LRVs (U2s) in the fleet. The new cars are three to four times more reliable than the old U2 trains.

City Council has approved $133 million of Provincial Green TRIP funding in addition to $67 million in previously approved funds for a total of $200 million to purchase 60 new CTrain cars. Each LRV will cost approximately $3.2 million CDN.

RouteAhead, Calgary Transit’s strategic plan, identified that the LRV fleet will need to grow from 192 to 390 over the next 30 years to achieve targets, including four-car train service.

The entire U2 fleet is close to retirement and 32 cars are actually older than their planned life (planned retirement age is 30 years.)

The first new LRV will be delivered in August 2015 with the full order of 60 to be completed by December 2016.

Calgary Transit thanks all bidders (Bombardier, CAF, Hyundai Rotem, Kinki Sharyo, Siemens) for their interest in seeking The City of Calgary as a customer.

Calgary Transit’s CTrain system is one of the most successful LRT systems in North America. CTrain ridership is over 300,000 every week day.

Richard Eccles is the star of the week.  He is the director of network strategy and planning for Network Rail, and he has a brilliant plan to test a battery powered train in the UK.  If successful, a battery powered train would have tremendous market potential considering the infrastructure savings (no need for miles of electric wiring).  Mr. Eccles envisions battery trains being charged at terminal stations.

“Network Rail is the not for dividend owner and operator of Britain’s railway infrastructure, which includes the tracks, signals, tunnels, bridges, viaducts, level crossings and stations – the largest of which we also manage.  We aim to provide a safe, reliable and efficient rail infrastructure for freight and passenger trains to use.” – Network Rail website.

Mr. Eccles plans to test a Class 379 train with two types of batteries: lithium (iron magnesium) phosphate and hot sodium nickel salt.  Bombardier, the train manufacturer, will test the batteries prior to retrofitting the train for the batteries.

If all the preliminary tests are successful, Mr. Eccles will start trialing the train on an electrified track with its pantograph down.  In this manner, if a problem arises, the team can reconnect the train using the pantograph.  The preliminary tests, retrofit and trials are expected to be complete by the end of 2014.

The Network Strategy and Planning team is responsible for liaison with the Department for Transport and Transport Scotland in the development of passenger franchise specifications. It acts as client for enhancement schemes funded by Network Rail and liaises with customers and stakeholders with regard to the scope of future renewals programmes and the opportunities for enhancements. – Network Rail website
