City Introduces Electric Buses to Edmonton

June 12, 2014 in BYD, Electric Bus, Electric Vehicles

Edmonton, Canada: Edmonton Transit System (ETS) added some stealth to its fleet. It began testing two electric buses known as ETS Stealth buses this week. The buses run quietly and cleanly and are more cost-effective to fuel and maintain than diesel engine buses currently used. Operated entirely on electricity, ETS Stealth buses have no exhaust pipes and generate zero emissions when being driven.

“We are very excited to be introducing electric bus technology to Edmonton streets,” said Councillor Andrew Knack. “The City of Edmonton is committed to finding the best combination of transportation technologies to enhance Edmonton’s sustainability, and we’re eager to see how well the ETS Stealth bus delivers ETS service across the city.”

The ETS Stealth buses will run on various ETS routes across the city, travelling with regularly scheduled buses in service and for special events. Passengers can board free of charge. Instead of paying a fare, passengers will be asked to complete a survey describing their experience riding an electric bus. “Public feedback is essential to determining the success of the ETS Stealth pilot project,” said ETS Bus Operations Divisional Supervisor Linda Kadatz. “We hope to hear from every ETS Stealth passenger so that we can make an informed decision later this year about pursuing electric bus technology in our long-term fleet replacement plans.”

The ETS Stealth buses are on lease from BYD Company Ltd. (Build Your Dreams) until October 2014. During the four-month pilot ETS will evaluate the suitability of the ETS Stealth bus based on several factors, including passenger load capacity, passenger comfort, reliability and how well the buses navigate Edmonton’s roadway network. Semuttran Pilot Tests BYD Pure Electric Bus in Piracicaba Brazil

June 11, 2014 in BYD, Electric Bus, Electric Vehicles, EV News

Piracicaba, Brazil — Brazilian Transit Operator Via Agile and Piracicaba’s Transit Authority Semuttran have started pilot testing with a pure-electric transit bus from BYD Company Ltd. The purpose of the evaluation is to find ways to reduce transportation costs and unnecessary emissions in and around the city of Piracicaba.

With the rising cost of diesel fuel in Brazil, Semuttran currently has an average operational fuel cost of R$ 0.90/ km (~$0.61 USD/ mile) on their diesel fueled transit fleet. Their fleet travels 93,500 km (57.6 K miles) annually, so the BYD Pure Electric bus would save them R$ 60,775 (~$26,423 USD) each year in fuel (electricity for the eBus is R$ 0.25/km or ~$0.18USD/ mile). These savings are necessary for operators as many cities in Brazil are attempting to expand their transportation footprint to meet growing demand. “Pilot tests have been very positive – if technical and commercial performance fulfills requirements for the system in Piracicaba, the City will foster the use of electrical buses,” said Jorge Akira, secretary of Semuttran. “So far, all reports from the bus drivers have been positive. There is not much difference from a normal bus when driving, since steering, pedals and dashboards are similar,” said Alcides Ferreira, a driver who has been working for Piracicaba transit companies for 17 years.

BYD’s pure-electric bus employs many advanced technologies developed in-house by BYD’s staff of more than 15,000 engineers, such as the advanced environmentally-friendly, Iron-Phosphate (or “Fe”) batteries, in-wheel hub motors and regenerative braking systems. The break-through Iron-Phosphate battery is fire-safe and non-toxic: there are no caustic materials contained in the battery, no toxic electrolytes or heavy metals and can be completely recycled. The BYD electric bus delivers a host of operational and environmental benefits for public transport riders, operators and people in the community – it is very quiet and ensures a comfortable ride without vibrations, jerks or noise associated with the conventional buses and combustion engines. The bus can also drive for more than 155 miles, even in heavy city traffic on a single charge. The bus has completed more than 16 million miles of “in revenue service” and has been evaluated in many major cities all over the world.

About Semuttran

The Secretary of Traffic and Transport (SEMUTTRAN) was created in the Municipality of Piracicaba, Brazil in April 1993 and is linked directly to the Chief Municipal Executive. The Secretariat’s main objective is the management of traffic and transport of Piracicaba, planning, organizing, and overseeing transit and provision of public passenger transport services. BYD electric bus

The BYD K9 model is the first 100% electric bus in mass production in the world and is the only one that uses BYD’s unique Iron Phosphate (or “Fe”) Battery. Iron Phosphate is considered the cleanest and safest in the market. They are recyclable and fireproof. The batteries are contained in three areas, on the roof besides the back axles and over the front wheels of the vehicle. They are recharged via a bidirectional AV systems with grid 380 VAC, which was already installed in the garage at Road A Mathias. Recharging takes four to five hours and allows an average driving range over 250 km.

The electric motors are built into the wheels of the rear axle making it more efficient for passenger loading since the floor height can be dropped lower than where conventional bus axels are. The configuration allows recovering energy when braking. According to BYD, its energy consumption is equivalent to 1.2-1.4 kWh/ km, which is around 75% more efficient than conventional buses, making it a lower operating and maintenance costs. The bus holds up to 80 passengers, 29 seated and 50 standing besides the placeholder for wheelchair users, equal to conventional buses.

Tesla stock (TSLA) hit another new record high today, $186.30 per share. And, yes, TSLA also had a record close, $185.24. As stated previously, some of this recent run may be attributed to Q3 institutional window dressing. Regardless, it is the strong fundamentals in the electrification movement that has TSLA flying high.

At LAX or SFO airport locations, the 85 kWh Model S is now available as a rental at Hertz. Tesla fans can rent a Model S at SFO and take a drive down to the new Tesla Fremont Factory store.

Around the world, clean energy technologies and projects are advancing at an accelerated rate, spurred by a fun competition amongst progressive business and political leaders to advance the world beyond fossil fuels. In the US, Google and Tesla are the leading green business advocates. Google is aiming to be 100% powered by renewable energies, and the company recently agreed to an electrifying purchase of 240 MW from the future Happy Hereford wind farm (Texas). As to Tesla, the company’s Model S and Supercharger technologies are the pinnacle of the electrification movement. Nothing says goodbye to fossil fuels better than an image of a Model S at a free Supercharger station.

The world is filled with various exhibitions and conferences on clean energy / clean transportation subjects, enabling industry experts to share best practices. These events create more deals and more jobs, leading to a more efficient electric economy and higher global production. ABB, Alstom and Siemens have been standout leaders in Western Europe where the electrification movement is most advanced.

In time (especially as battery technology advances), there will be some interesting city, state and national upgrades to the new electric era. Battery technology is the key. As fast as the electric wiring for streetcars, light rail and trains goes up, it may be coming back down as battery technology improves. In addition, large warehouse structures will eventually dot the landscape, housing large battery storage for renewable energy projects.

BYD has made it very clear that the company wants to be a worldwide leader in electric urban transport with its electric buses (K9) and taxis (E6), as well as lead in battery storage technologies with renewable energies. The company is obviously well positioned to service the monumental clean energy needs of China, but the greening of China will be a grand collaborative scheme. BYD’s efforts to transform Aruba to a zero carbon footprint are a tiny carbon step in respects to China.
