Brasilia, Brazil – BYD Company Ltd.’s Wang Chuanfu made history this week signing a contract to be the first Chinese manufacturer to open a battery factory in Brazil. The magnificence of the event was only elevated by the presence of both Xi Jinping, the President of China, and Dilma Rousseff, the President of Brazil, whom were already together for the BRIC Summit that week in Brasilia.

The deal to build a factory in which BYD will produce their revolutionary fire safe, and completely recyclable Iron-Phosphate Batteries will bring BYD’s investment in Brazil up to $400,000,000.00. The batteries will be manufactured in an area of 1,500,000 square meters, and support BYD’s growing new energy business throughout Latin and South America. After signing, BYD’s Founder and Chairman, Wang Chuanfu said he was completely honored to be a part of such a historic moment, and in the company of two great public leaders. The deal was structured through Apex-Brasil, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency. Their President, Mr. Mauricio Borges, spoke to the importance of renewable energy technologies, and how Brazil is at a critical point in history where they must begin adopting these alternative solutions.

This news comes on the back of another project BYD had just announced in the city of Campinas, Brazil. The Campinas factory is being opened to manufacture BYD’s long range pure electric transit bus, as well as serve as a research and development facility for a number of BYD’s other renewable energy technologies.

Campinas, Brazil — The city of Campinas (in the São Paulo region of Brazil) has been selected as the home to the BYD’s newest factory creating ~450 new local jobs. Executives from Campinas City Hall and BYD Company Ltd. this week announced the opening of the company’s first South American manufacturing facility. The factory is slated to open in 2015 and will launch the manufacturing and assembly of the world’s only long range pure electric transit bus in South America as well the first fire safe and recyclable Iron-Phosphate battery packs. “In the first year of operation (starting in 2015), the plant will have a maximum production capacity of 1,000 electric buses as well as all of their batteries,” said BYD Brazil’s General Manager Tyler Li. “This is the first stage of manufacturing expansion.”

BYD Founder and Chairman, Mr. Wang Chuanfu stated, “BYD chose Campinas because of this city’s spirit of innovation and their goal of building a cleaner society. Along with the buses and batteries, our dream is to build solar panels and energy storage systems here to help the region achieve their zero emissions goals.” In additional to the 32,000m2 and 20,000m2 manufacturing facilities on campus, BYD also plans to open a Research & Development center for their Photovoltaic, Smart-Grid and LED Lighting businesses in the second phase of site development. The Mayor of Campinas, Jonas Donizette pointed out, “BYD fits very well in our City’s quest to attract investments, it is a company that produces goods and technologies related to the use of renewable energies, and also operates in key segments for the future of cities with sustainable urban mobility plans.” This sentiment was echoed by many, including the President of Invest Saint Paul, Luciano Almeida, “In February of this year, we visited BYD in China and observed cutting edge technology and the quality of their products. The arrival of BYD in the State strengthens the role of St. Paul to always be at the forefront of new technologies.”

Altoona Testing of First 40-foot, Zero-Emissions Electric Rapid Transit Bus is Complete

May 28, 2014 in BYD, Electric Bus, Electric Vehicles, EV News

The BYD Electric Bus is first 40-foot electric bus to complete the Federal Transit Administration’s sponsored testing

Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA: The Altoona Bus Research and Testing Center under the Larson Institute and sponsored by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), last week completed the FTA’s “new model bus testing program” of the first 40-foot, all-electric bus. The BYD Electric Bus has successfully completed the Altoona structural integrity testing program in a fast 116 track days *with full reports published soon. This is the world’s first and only long-range battery electric transit bus in mass production and the only bus capable of driving continuously for up to 24 hours on-a-single-charge that has also received TVM approvals and qualified for FTA funded projects.

“The Altoona staff were professional and accommodating guiding BYD through the process and ensuring all testing met the Federal standards. The FTA were supportive of our efforts to ensure that this vehicle, the first 40-foot, all-electric bus to be tested met the North American standards and was properly tested within the guidelines. BYD will commence shortly with the testing of the BYD 60-foot Bus-Rapid-Transit (BRT) style all-electric bus at Altoona, another first for the Transit Industry,” said BYD Motors President Stella Li. “We believe that our 40-foot bus is one of the most structurally sound transit buses on roads today. Yet like all manufacturers, our engineers found ways, through this testing, to make improvements to ensure the sort of long-lasting quality BYD has become known for.” BYD’s electric bus has no transmission, clutches or drive train but has instead two robust in-wheel-drive motors powered by batteries on board the bus. BYD sees this recent accomplishment as the first of many, in what will be a long and productive relationship with the Altoona Bus Testing and Research Center. The 40 foot BYD Electric Bus is just the first of three different size options that will be offered to the United States for the 2014/2015 deliveries. Next at Altoona will be the 60-foot articulated BYD All-Electric bus.

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (5-22-13, BUSINESS WIRE)-BUQUEBUS and CTS Auto S.A. in partnership with Chinese automaker, BYD Ltd unveiled the first 12 meter rapid transit bus powered 100% by electricity in Uruguay and the region today. The ceremony was the culmination of an Electric Bus contract announced last year and was attended by President Mujica, Roberto Kreimerman Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining, Mrs. Liliam Kechichian, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Mr. Lopez Mena from BUQUEBUS, and Mr. Sasson Attie from CTS AUTO S.A., representing BYD Ltd. The BYD Electric Bus integrates several cutting-edge technologies including two in-wheel, electric motors capable of a cruising speed over 88 km/h (or > 55mph), and a first of its kind environmentally-friendly Iron-Phosphate Battery. This drive system provides a range of over 250 km (155 miles) – nearly 24 hours of service daily for most transit applications. The BYD battery technology also allows for a full charge in less than 5 hours. The bus can be charged overnight, while the electricity pricing is lower.

The rechargeable battery system and electric motors developed by BYD engineers together offer a significant savings in both energy consumption and environmental pollution. Because of the in-wheel-hub motors, the BYD Electric Bus has the lowest floor of any bus. There is only one step onto the bus, allowing quick and easy access for people with reduced mobility, wheelchairs and baby strollers. The units unveiled today are designed to fulfill the tourist bus routes in the city of Colonia, but soon, several long-distance BYD-options will join the BUQUEBUS as urban transport buses.

By 2015 it is expected that more than 500 BYD electric buses will be running on the streets and roads of Uruguay, generating significant environmental impact. The CO2 savings (vs. traditional diesel bus) is equal to 20,000 hectares of Forest per 500 buses in circulation – this is the same area covered by the entire city of Montevideo. The Green Footprint concept has important benefits to the environment. The BYD Electric Bus produces no gaseous emissions and engine noise is almost imperceptible (see video link).
