Nissan global corporate activities reduce CO2 emissions by 15.4 percent

YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. reduced CO2 emissions from global corporate activities in fiscal year 2013 while increasing vehicle production by 5.1 percent. The 2.0 percent cut in CO2 during the year puts the company on track to achieve its goal of a 20 percent reduction by fiscal year 2016, compared to 2005. Nissan set the target in its mid-term environmental action plan, the Nissan Green Program 2016 (NGP2016). CO2 emissions through Nissan’s corporate activities* have already been reduced by 15.4 percent (t-CO2/vehicle)** during the program.

Sustainable mobility is a key corporate objective for Nissan. The company is the world’s biggest manufacturer of zero emission all-electric vehicles. Sales of the Nissan LEAF have reached 120,000 units. Nissan is building on its lead in electric passenger vehicles by launching the e-NV200, an all-electric van in the LCV segment.

Nissan is reducing the environmental impact of its corporate activities through widespread power conservation. Energy procurement is being shifted toward more sustainable sources, like biomass and solar power. For example, in Mexico, Nissan is using wind turbines to help run its Aguascalientes plant. In Japan, Nissan will increase the amount of renewable energy it buys from 5,200 MWh to four times that amount by fiscal year 2016 through the Power Producers and Suppliers (PPS) system. A result of the deregulation of the energy market in Japan, the PPS system allowed new electricity suppliers and retailers to enter the market, including these that generate power from sustainable sources. The clean electricity will be used in factories and in sales outlets’ quick chargers where customers can plug in Nissan LEAF vehicles to recharge their batteries. Charging of EVs with clean energy puts the company one step closer toward the realization of zero-emission mobility.

The following list contains the primary activities and results for NGP2016 in fiscal year 2013. Further details of activities and results for NGP2016 can be found in Nissan’s “Sustainability Report 2014.”

Main Activities Progress Progress Achieved in FY2013
1) Zero-emission vehicle penetration Preparation to launch the second EV model, the e-NV200 (sales commenced in June 2014)
2) Fuel-efficient vehicle expansion Corporate Average Fuel Economy improved by 31.5 percent over FY2005; CVT-equipped vehicle sales at 2.79 million units
3) Corporate carbon footprint minimization CO2 emissions from corporate activities reduced by 15.4 percent (t-CO2/vehicle vs FY2005)
4) New natural resource use minimization Fortification and set up of water conservation goals within the global Nissan group

* CO2 emissions from global manufacturing, distribution (shipping activities to manufacturing facilities located in Japan, North America, EU, and China, and to retail stores), office activities in Japan, North America, EU, and China, and Japan retail-related company activities.

** Calculated by dividing the CO2 emissions from Nissan’s global corporate activities with Nissan’s global unit sales. The methodology for calculating has been reviewed from fiscal year 2013.

MEXICO CITY – Nissan today announced the launch of LEAF, the first 100 percent electric vehicle to be marketed in Mexico. The presale starts today and will continue until its arrival on June 30.

Nissan LEAF is the first zero-emissions vehicle marketed in Mexico, confirming the leadership and the promise of the Japanese company to transform traditional driving into a new silent experience.

“Nissan LEAF is a reality in the Mexican market,” said Airton Cousseau, CEO of Nissan Mexicana. “We are proud to be the pioneer company to introduce the first zero-emissions vehicle leader in sales worldwide in Mexico. This release represents an honor for us and recognizes a milestone in the history of innovation in Nissan, a cornerstone of our business strategy.”

In Mexico, the Nissan LEAF will be available in a unique version with Around View Monitor that allows a panoramic view around the car, “B Mode driving” that allows power renewal almost immediately after the throttle is removed, a fast-charging port that allows a recharge of 80 percent of the battery in just 30 minutes, leather seats, a 7-inch touch screen, and many other features.

“Many of the 115,000 LEAF users have expressed the thrill of driving an electric vehicle,” said Alejandro Viveros, senior manager of the zero-emissions business unit. “Having a Nissan LEAF is a totally fun and satisfying experience that now Mexican customers can enjoy.”

Initially, the Nissan LEAF in Mexico will be available for sale through Nissan’s certified dealership network located in Mexico City.

In addition, Nissan and the Government of the State of Morelos have taken the initiative to create the first electric corridor in Latin America that will be located between Mexico City and Cuernavaca.

Mexico City soon will have a development plan to install charging zones in Colonia Roma, Colonia Del Valle, Coyoacan, Polanco, Santa Fe, Ciudad Satelite, Altavista and San Angel.

“The main goal of this infrastructure is to increase the offer of charging stations to increase the confidence and safety when driving an electric vehicle, with the benefit of a responsible social change,” said Jorge Vallejo, director of external relations and government affairs for Nissan in Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean. “We understand the anxiety that driving an electric vehicle can cause without the proper infrastructure in each city, and the most important and positive fact is that every Nissan LEAF user has the chance to charge the vehicle at home.”

Nissan presented the results of a study led by INAINE (Institute for Ecological Research Assistance, AC) in relation to the development of EV infrastructure in Mexico City. The study was possible thanks to a fund that METI (a Japanese government entity) awarded Nissan, and it confirmed the viability of infrastructure development for the marketing of EVs in Mexico City.

Nissan delivers 50,000th all-electric LEAF in U.S. to Texas family

May 23, 2014 in Electric Vehicles, EV enthusiast, EV News, LEAF, Nissan

DALLAS – Nissan, the global leader in electric vehicle (EV) sales, achieved another milestone this month as Dallas residents Todd and Lisa Bolt made Nissan LEAF the first all-electric model to hit 50,000 sales in the U.S. The Bolt family took delivery of their black LEAF SL earlier this month at AutoNation Nissan of Lewisville.

Thanks to enthusiastic owner advocates, robust public charging infrastructure and the launch of a successful free charging promotion, Dallas – and the state of Texas – have become hot growth markets for LEAF. So far in 2014, LEAF sales in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex have grown by about 50 percent over the previous year, with that growth set to accelerate faster thanks in part to the introduction of a new state tax rebate of up to $2,500 on the purchase or lease of a new Nissan LEAF.

“Beyond the simple economics of not buying gas, we’ve been impressed with how well the LEAF drives,” said Todd Bolt, a pastor at Gateway Church in Southlake. “When we show the LEAF off to family and friends, they’re surprised that the car is so quiet and rides so well. The LEAF does everything we need day-to-day, and given the financial savings, I don’t know why we’d buy another gas car.”

Infographic courtesy of Nissan

Electric vehicle ownership has taken hold at Gateway Church, where both Todd and Lisa work, after an executive pastor did the math and decided to buy a Nissan LEAF. Now, more than 20 employees are in the fold, jokingly referring to themselves as the “Blessed LEAFs Club.”

Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston are among 10 launch markets for “No Charge to Charge,” a new promotion that provides two years of no-cost public charging to new LEAF buyers who took delivery of their car after April 1, 2014. The national promotion is modeled after a successful pilot program launched in Dallas and Houston last fall with Houston-based NRG eVgo.

“With ‘No Charge to Charge,’ the new EV tax credit and enthusiastic new owners like the Bolt family, Dallas is poised to climb the ranks of leading LEAF sales markets,” said Toby Perry, director, EV Marketing for Nissan. “Texas is a great indicator that the right mix of customer awareness and strategically placed charging can lead to rapid EV adoption, and we expect to use that model to grow our sales in markets across the U.S.”

With nearly 115,000 global sales since launch, Nissan LEAF is the world’s top-selling electric vehicle. LEAF seats up to five passengers and boasts an estimated driving range on a fully-charged battery of 84 miles and MPGe ratings of 126 city, 101 highway and 114 combined. With a starting price of less than $30,000, LEAF is competitively priced with similar gas-powered cars after applicable tax credits, while providing the benefits of lower running costs and less scheduled maintenance.

LEAF is powered by an advanced lithium-ion battery and an 80kW motor that provides a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience. A Nissan LEAF can be charged to 80 percent of its full capacity in about 30 minutes using its available quick charge port and a quick charger. Charging at home through a 220V outlet is estimated to take approximately five hours with the 6.6 kW onboard charger (approximately eight hours with the S grade’s standard 3.6 kW charger).

Nissan LEAF celebrates International Noise Awareness Day with a nighttime “silent ride” through a sleepy European village

April 30, 2014 in Electric Vehicles, EV enthusiast, EV News, LEAF, Nissan

ROLLE, Switzerland – To mark the 19th annual International Noise Awareness Day (INAD), Nissan has taken to the streets of one of Europe’s quietest villages during the middle of the night with a silent “ride” of its 100 percent electric Nissan LEAF.

The activity, complete with a start and finish line in Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur, was designed to demonstrate the noise reduction levels of the Zero Emissions car compared to traditional combustion engines.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states at least 13.5 percent of Europeans are exposed to road traffic noise at levels exceeding 55 dB, which is considered detrimental to human health*. The medical effects of noise levels include insomnia (50dB), obesity (50dB), psychic disorders (60dB) and reduction in life expectancy (50dB)*. As a result, Nissan has filmed a ‘silent ride’ to help support INAD in raising awareness about noise pollution levels across Europe.

The video stunt, filmed in one of Europe’s quietest villages in the early hours of the morning, shows four Nissan LEAF vehicles racing around the backstreets at high speeds without waking anyone up. Members of the village were filmed while they slept to monitor their reactions.

The running noise of the Nissan LEAF engine is 21dB*, recording less noise than a ceiling fan (26dB) – which is way below the World Health Organization’s night time noise target for Europe (40dB).

Launched by the Center for Hearing and Communication (CHC), INAD aims to raise awareness about the dangers of exposure to noise on hearing and health – including emotional and physical health problems such as impaired mental performance, high blood pressure and increased risk of motor vehicle injuries*.

The Center for Hearing and Communications Executive Director Laurie Hanin said: “International Noise Awareness Day was initiated by the Center for Hearing and Communication in 1995 in order to increase public awareness about the harmful effects of noise on hearing, health, and general well-being.

“As a result, many thousands have had their hearing screened and many more have been educated in the numerous ways to prevent exposure to hazardous levels of noise.

“It is exciting to see Nissan showing off the benefits of their all-electric car, the Nissan LEAF, in this video highlighting that as well as being friendly to the environment, it is also friendly to the community by reducing noise pollution. Congratulations and good luck in this endeavor.”

Launched four years ago, the zero emissions Nissan LEAF continues to provide consumers with the benefits of an all-electric car – a quiet and dynamic driving experience, lower operating costs, the increased convenience of charging at home and less scheduled maintenance – at a price after tax incentives that rival comparable gas-powered vehicles.

Jean-Pierre Diernaz, director of electric vehicles, Nissan Europe commented: “One thing that surprises people most about the Nissan LEAF is the feeling of near silence, it is incredibly liberating and makes for a very relaxing driving experience. Most of the noise you hear when a Nissan LEAF is running at low speed in town is actually artificially created to help alert pedestrians to the vehicle’s presence.

“Electric vehicles like the Nissan LEAF will play a very large role in the move to create ‘smarter cities’ worldwide – cities that aim to create smart solutions for a range of city problems from air pollution to traffic congestion. The goal is to build cities like these where people drive electric vehicles like the Nissan LEAF and the new e-NV200, which will launch in Europe in June. This is a concept that Nissan supports whole heartedly and aims to be a part of now and in years to come.”

The United Kingdom, France and Italy are the countries worst affected by traffic noise during the day (levels higher than 55dB), resulting in higher risks of cardiovascular diseases and premature death*.

NEW YORKNissan today announced the expansion of its successful “No Charge to Charge” promotion, which will provide two years of no-cost public charging with the purchase or lease of a new Nissan LEAF. In total, Nissan will launch “No Charge to Charge” in 25 U.S. markets, which are currently responsible for more than 80 percent of Nissan LEAF sales.

The “No Charge to Charge” expansion will use the new EZ-ChargeSM card, a first-of-its-kind platform that will offer Nissan LEAF owners access to the leading EV charging networks with a single, all-access card. New owners will receive an EZ-Charge card that will provide access to chargers with ChargePoint, Blink Network from Car Charging Group, AeroVironment and NRG eVgo.

“‘No Charge to Charge’ and EZ-Charge are a winning combination, making public charging free and easy for new LEAF buyers,” said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing, Aftersales. “Public charging is an important way to provide added range confidence to EV buyers and persuade more shoppers to join the more than 110,000 LEAF drivers around the world.”

“No Charge to Charge” will launch using the EZ-Charge card on July 1, 2014, in 10 of the top markets for Nissan LEAF sales, including San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Nashville, Phoenix, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston and Washington, DC. The “No Charge to Charge” offer and EZ-Charge card will be provided retroactively to buyers in these markets who purchased their LEAF on or after April 1, 2014.

After the rollout in the first 10 markets, Nissan plans to add “No Charge to Charge” and EZ-Charge at LEAF dealers in at least 15 additional markets during the following year. More details on the programs in these additional markets will be made available closer to their launch.

The EZ-Charge access card is managed by NRG eVgo with support from ChargePoint, CarCharging and AeroVironment.

“Nissan’s commitment to mass-market electric cars is matched by our commitment to increase charging infrastructure for LEAF owners,” said Brendan Jones, director, Nissan EV Infrastructure and Strategy. “EZ-Charge is a natural progression of our multi-pronged commitment to developing EV charging at workplace campuses, at Nissan LEAF dealerships and in the communities where LEAF drivers live and work.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Nissan LEAF continues to make automotive history, becoming the best-selling electric vehicle ever with global sales of more than 100,000 units and U.S. sales approaching 50,000. Collectively, it is estimated that owners in 35 countries have saved more than $28 million in gasoline costs – since the zero-emissions LEAF requires none.

To celebrate these achievements and inspire the next 100,000 LEAF buyers, Nissan has just launched a new digital program called “Real Owners. Real Questions.” – where current LEAF owners share their stories and reasons with anyone who’d like to know what it’s really like to go 100 percent electric with the Nissan LEAF.

The new website, www.nissanusa.com/electric-cars/leaf/owner-questions, features more than 500 quotes, 200 images and original video footage. The site uses dynamic content tiles and suggestive search functionality to provide the most relevant answers. For example, visitors can browse a library of questions from the curious, “What’s the longest trip you’ve ever taken?” to the practical, “How much money have you saved?” or completely novel, by tapping into the Facebook community of LEAF owners directly to answer their questions.

In addition to crowdsourcing video responses from owners, several videos of unique stories are showcased on the site, like LEAF owner Neal Wagner, who is shown using a journey to catch a sunrise on Maui’s Haleakala Volcano to charge his LEAF.

The campaign was created in partnership with Critical Mass, Nissan North America’s digital agency of record, which also created the award-winning online campaign to launch Nissan LEAF in 2010.
