BERKELEY, Calif.-Two new charging stations for electric vehicles will open today in Berkeley, where the number of electric vehicles is surging.

The new charging stations at the Whole Foods in South Berkeley include a DC Fast Charging station that can add 40 miles of range to an electric vehicle in about 10 minutes. About 350 electric vehicles are registered to Berkeley residents and businesses, an increase of over 70 percent in the last six months.

Whole Foods, on Telegraph at Ashby Avenues, is the first business to participate in a City of Berkeley pilot program to ease the permitting and installation of EV charging stations. The Non-Residential Plug-In Electric Vehicle Charging Station Pilot Program has staff who personally guide businesses through the process. Applications will be accepted through the end of the year.

“It is only natural that we offer EV charging stations at our stores, especially in forward-thinking communities like Berkeley,” said Tristam Coffin, Energy and Maintenance Coordinator at Whole Foods Market.

The City of Berkeley supports the spread of EV infrastructure and the use of electric vehicles as part of the Climate Action Plan’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 33% by 2020. Vehicle travel currently generates over half of our community’s greenhouse gas emissions and driving an EV in Berkeley in place of a conventional automobile can reduce the greenhouse emissions associated with its travel by as much as 70%.

The new EV charging stations installed at the Whole Foods are operated by NRG eVgo and offer DC fast charging and Level 2 charging. Shoppers can use a credit card or subscribe to one of NRG eVgo’s charging plans to pay for charging at Whole Foods EV charging stations.

“The City of Berkeley’s pilot program has expedited the permitting process for electric vehicle charging station installations and enabled us to more quickly deploy the NRG eVgo network for drivers in the area,” said Terry O’Day, Vice President of NRG eVgo in California.

CALIFORNIA – Today NRG eVgo, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG), announced that it has partnerships and agreements in place to have more than 200 fast-charging Freedom Station® charging sites built throughout California. Currently, NRG has a total of 46 electric vehicle (EV) charging sites operational, under construction or currently being permitted in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco with 15 operational across the state of California.

“We are making great progress building a comprehensive infrastructure that will make owning an electric vehicle even more convenient and fun. As this network is built out, it will make buying an EV attractive to even more drivers across California,” said Terry O’Day, Vice President of NRG eVgo in California. “The pace of construction has significantly increased. We have been encouraged by the support of partners like Simon Property Group and Kimco Realty Corp., the nation’s largest owner-operators of retail shopping centers, to deploy Freedom Station sites across the state giving us more than 200 potential fast-charging stations throughout California.”

Also advancing charging at apartment communities and workplaces, eVgo has more than 50 sites under contract representing over 400 parking spots and recently announced a partnership with Sequoia Equities, a leader in multifamily investment management, to provide EV “Level 2” charging infrastructure at 28 apartment communities across the state. Additionally, NRG has completed site assessments and construction drawings for hundreds more sites, which could ultimately result in 2,000 more EV-ready parking spaces.

Helping to ensure the benefits of electric vehicles are available to all, more than 20% of the Freedom Station sites built, under construction or in permitting, are located in qualified lower-income regions.

By the end of 2016, the eVgo Freedom Station network will support California EV drivers in the greater San Diego area, the San Francisco Bay Area, the Los Angeles Basin and the San Joaquin Valley. This expanded network means improved air quality, less dependence on foreign oil, a lower total cost of ownership of vehicles, and overall—a better, cleaner California.

“We take great pride in helping reframe the way Californians think about electric cars and their ability to enjoy cleaner transportation by providing the state with the best and most robust fast charging infrastructure in the United States,” said O’Day.

eVgo’s progress can be reviewed in their most recent report to the California Public Utility Commission via http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/puc/.

eVgo Complete Plan is an EV Industry Game Changer

January 9, 2013 in Electric Vehicles, EV charging, EV News

The best story for EV charging in 2013 is the EV charging company eVgo.  The company is currently operating in Houston and Dallas Fort Worth, Texas, and I suspect that eVgo will eventually dominate those EV charging markets.  The reason is simple, $89 a month!

The Complete Plan by eVgo is a game changer for the EV charging market.  In the Complete Plan, the company will rent you a 240v EV charger for your home, pay for the electricity to power your EV at home, and give you unlimited access to the eVgo network (Freedom Stations) for $89 a month.  And no, you do not have to pay for the installation, as long as it is a standard installation.  The company says that most installations qualify as standard.  The installation will take place within three to five days after the customer picks a plan.  When you get your home electric bill, it will show a rebate on your statement for your EV charging.

With this eVgo Complete Plan, there is no more guesswork about the savings associated with EV fueling.  It costs you $89.  Most automobile drivers in the United States are paying over $200 a month in gasoline, so there are substantial monthly fuel savings for most everyone.  In a phone interview with Terry O’Day and Carly Kade of eVgo, both emphasized the importance of taking the mystery out of EV fuel savings.  They are obviously right, because the company is getting results.  The company stated: “Greater than 80% of the people we talk with subscribe to one of our plans and of that, 75% choose a plan with access to our public charging network.”

Terry O’Day is eVgo’s director of California business development, and he also pointed out the importance of building a condensed charging network.  The company plan is to build condensed regional networks, so the customer is never further than five to seven miles from a Freedom Station.  The Freedom Stations have both level II (240v) chargers and fast chargers.  The fast chargers will give an EV driver about 50 miles of charge in fifteen minutes.  Terry O’Day stated: “This makes it psychologically safe to buy an EV.”

This is only part one of this eVgo story.  For now, I want to make clear that eVgo offers many plan options.  There are cheaper options, depending on the needs of the customer.  The Complete Plan in Texas is locked in at $89 for three years.  The company has not set up a price plan for California, but the company has huge plans to discuss.  California is the biggest EV market in the United States, and Terry O’Day is a smart man with a big quest.
